Thorn: The Lighting Installation that Emulates Nature

Yılmaz Dogan's Award-Winning Design Offers Limitless Diversity of Form

Yılmaz Dogan's Thorn, a lighting installation inspired by the organic forms of nature, breaks the boundaries of traditional lighting design. With its limitless diversity of form and dimension, Thorn brings an innovative approach to lighting, offering a unique aesthetic experience.

Thorn's design was inspired by the growth and differentiation of organic forms in nature. The randomness of their existence allows these forms to evolve without disrupting their holistic structures and expressions. This natural phenomenon resonates with humans due to biophilia, an instinctive intimacy for natural forms. This feeling of intimacy is one of the basic elements of inner peace, which Thorn aims to evoke through its design.

What sets Thorn apart from other lighting installations is its ability to eliminate dimensional and formal limits. Composed of only two different pieces, Thorn offers a limitless diversity of form and a freedom of sizing in lighting design and production. Its sculptural stance and dynamic structure differentiate it from every angle, allowing it to transform into any size and form in any kind of living space and meet diverse lighting needs.

Thorn is designed to maximize possible forms with the fewest elements. It consists of a combination of only two different parts, offering an unlimited form diversity and freedom of infinite dimensioning in lighting design and production. The backbone piece with 3 openings joining at 120 degrees constitutes the main structure, and it interlocks with the gear system. The sticks creating the thorn figure are built by light massive wood lathe.

The project was originally designed as a raw idea sketch in 2015 and put on hold. It was re-interpreted in February 2018 and completed in September 2018 in Ankara. In November 2018, Thorn was showcased at Design Week Turkey. The design research began by imitating a piece of thorn branch merged with the question of "how can we overcome the differentiation of dimension, form, and shape with the least number of pieces?" Thorn's design process was a testament to overcoming creative, technical, and research challenges.

Thorn's design is protected under Utility Model and Design Registration. It has also been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Silver A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.

In conclusion, Thorn is a testament to Yılmaz Dogan's innovative approach to lighting design. By emulating the organic forms of nature, Thorn offers a unique aesthetic experience that resonates with the human instinct for natural forms. With its limitless diversity of form and dimension, Thorn is set to revolutionize the world of lighting design.
